In this study, Johannes Nagel examines a series of far-reaching Army and Navy reforms in the USA between 1865 and 1905 in a global context, with a particular focus on the societal effects of the First Globalization. Although security and empire-seeking played a role in these reforms, only adaptation to global norms and models can explain why they took the form they did – and why the U.S. began to shape itself into a European-style great military power.
