This volume, the thirty-second year of published proceedings, contains five papers and commentaries presented to the Boston Area Colloquium in Ancient Philosophy during the academic year 2015-16. Paper topics include: Stoic constitution of bodies through blending as causal; the failure to distinguish divine and human eros in the Phaedrus; perception in the Republicâs tripartite soul, recognizing autonomy in the non-rational parts; Stoic identity, peculiar qualities and the role of the pneuma, and an alternative read of Platoâs politics that pairs his philosophical theory and historical events, the Republic as reconstruction of Socratesâ defense in the Apology and the Laws as a reconstruction of Platoâs idea of political reform in the Seventh Letter.
Gary M. Gurtler, S.J., is Associate Professor of Philosophy at Boston College. He has published on ancient philosophy, including 2 books, most recently Ennead IV.4.30-45, IV.5, Translation and Commentary (2015), and co-edited Ancient and Medieval Concepts of Friendship (2014).
William Wians is Professor of Philosophy at Merrimack College. He has edited eleven previous volumes of BACAP proceedings. His collection Logos and Muthos: Philosophical Essays in Greek Literature was published in 2009. A second volume is in preparation.
