The Tunisian Mosque in Palermo: Space, Religious Authority and Relations

Abstract
This article employs analytical categories from the field of Islamic studies to examine the recent history of the mosque managed by the Tunisian consulate in Palermo, and the dynamics surrounding it in relation to the urban context. In view of the paucity of studies on this subject, the present study aims to address this lacuna in the literature on contemporary Islam in Italy. The analysis of Muslim communities in southern Italy seeks to enhance comprehension of Islam within the national context and emphasise its distinctive features within the broader discourse on contemporary Islam in Europe. The mosque, which has historically been referred to as the Tunisian mosque, serves as a point of departure for the discussion on Islamic physical and immaterial spaces and religious authority. The fieldwork (interviews, observation and informal conversations) and documentary collection (including mosque’s engagement on social media, press, documents, ISTAT (National Institute of Statistics) reports, administrative measures by the Municipality) that form the basis of this contribution cover a period, albeit discontinuous, from the summer of 2020 to March 2024. The findings highlight the necessity for a more comprehensive understanding of this subject, emphasising the importance of examples from the South of Italy.
