Abstract

Among the treasures in the drawing cabinet in the Musée dc Louvre is an Eyckian drawing of great interest. It shows a scene with Jacqueline of Bavaria; there is a clear view of her, but not of her four husbands, which is confusing. It was made after the dramatic disappearance of the former minister at the moment when the choice of the second was occupying people's minds. The next winner of the competition, Jean IV of Brabant, is seen in the midst of a group of men; he is looking towards us. The drawing could date from 1417. The handwriting is that of Jan van Eyck, in those days at the service of Jacqueline's father. The drawing is damaged and shows an old repair. It is listed in an inventory of 1619 as merely a witness to the evolution of fashion.
