Abstract

Five drawings by Karel van Mander are discussed. The two early ones were done while he was in Italy. Van Mander's frescos in Terni, including St. Bartholomew's Night, are then compared with Vasari's paintings in the Sala Regia in the Vatican as derivations. This is preceded by a review of the relevant bibliography, notably Noë, Miedema, Melion and Sapori. The article ends by advocating a multilateral, balanced, methodical approach.
