On Second Thought: Mingyuan shiwei, Zhang Hao, and Wang Duanshuâs Editorial Hand

Abstract
This follow-up piece begins by summarizing the main ideas from an earlier article in Nan Nü (27.1), which built on the idea that the anthology Mingyuan shiwei was revised two or three years after its initial publication in 1667. The revision must have been inspired by the life and early death of Zhang Hao, a woman poet. The current article sets down three refinements of this material. The first is an elaboration of Wang Duanshuâs extensive activities on the revision. The second is a contrast between Wangâs interpretation of Zhangâs life and death and those of three other commentators. The third is an exploration of Zhangâs relationship with her sister Zhang Ang, as well as of Wang Duanshuâs greater willingness to discuss this relationship than one finds with other commentators.
