Cestodes of the genus Mesocestoides from a mongoose (Herpestes ichneumon), three jackals (Canis aureus), three foxes (Vulpes vulpes) and a hyaena (Hyaena hyaena) in Israel are described. The hyaena is a new host record for Mesocestoides. Two species groups could be distinguished: group A with a long-oval or elongate cirrus pouch and a short cirrus with one or two coils when inverted; and group B with an oval to broad-oval cirrus pouch and a long, more or less highly convoluted cirrus. The hyaena harboured specimens of both groups. A re-examination of some specimens from the collection of Witenberg showed that they included, under the name M. lineatus forma lineata (Witenberg, 1934), worms with entirely different cirrus pouches.
