YABRUDICHTHYS AND SERRILEPIS, TWO NEW GENERA OF ENCHODONTOIDS (TELEOSTEI) FROM LOWER CENOMANIAN BEDS OF 'Ein-YABRŪD, ISRAEL

Two new genera and species, Yabrudichthys striatus and Serrilepis longidens, are described from well-laminated limestone at 'Ein-Yabrūd, Israel. The fish-bearing beds are part of the 'Amminadav Formation, and are dated to the Lower Cenomanian. Y. striatus is distinguished mainly by a short body with an elongated snout, double articulation in the quadrate-lower jaw joint, an anterior expansion on the center of the cleithrum, long-based dorsal fin and a naked body. S. longidens is distinguished mainly by a broad and shallow head, a small orbit, the presence of nasal, antorbital, supraorbital and a single supramaxilla, a remarkably developed dentition and a complete body cover of high and thin scales with a saw-like posterior margin. It is suggested to classify the new genera within the suborder Enchodontoidei, not to determine the family assignment of Yabrudichthys, and to erect for Serrilepis a new monotypic family, Serrilepidae. A discussion of the mode of life of the species suggests that Yabrudichthys was a mid-water predator, feeding on small schooling fishes, whereas Serrilepis was a benthic predator, which burrowed in the sediment, lying in wait for prey, or looking for underground prey.
