THE APPEARANCE OF TWO TYPES OF ARTEMIA CYSTS IN THE SALT PONDS OF ELAT, ISRAEL: PRACTICAL ASPECTS OF COLLECTION, PROCESSING AND USAGE

Locally collected brine shrimp (Artemia spp.) cysts were used in the experimental hatchery of I.O.L.R., Elat, during the years 1978–1983. The cysts were collected from the salt ponds of the new salt works. Methods of collecting, processing and usage of the cysts are described, together with problems encountered. Two types of cysts, both new for Elat, were observed: one darker, average diam 223 μm; the other of lighter color, 266 μm diam. Distributions and size ranges of cysts and nauplii are presented, including data on hatching rates of both types of cyst which underwent some of the processing treatments described. According to preliminary data, the percentage of the essential fatty acid 20:5ω3 in the small-type cysts is suitable for marine larval fish. Possible effects of nauplius size and other parameters on larval fish and the hypothetical origin of the strains are discussed and management procedures suggested.
