As one of the witnesses of the early development of the hydrobiological research in Israel, it is a great pleasure for me to retrace the early scientific activity of Prof. K. Reich. The early stages of the hydrobiological research in this country were closely related to the first scientific steps of the young scientist who in 1928 decided to attach his life to the pioneer work done in Palestine. Born in 1902 in Lemberg (Lwow), Ph. D. of the University of Vienna in 1926, K. Reich started his scientific activity as an assistant at the Department of Agriculture of the Mandatory Government of Palestine in 1929 and in 1930 as a junior assistant of the newly founded Hebrew University. Ever since, K. Reich has been educating whole generations of zoologists. As one of his first students I am glad to contribute to the celebration of his 60-th birthday these few biographical notes.
