This essay investigates how Michael Heberer (c. 1560–1623) processed his first encounter with Denmark and Sweden in writing when accompanying Heinrich of Schwerin to the wedding of Duke Carl and Christina von Holstein-Gottorp in 1592. The focus will be on the interplay between ‘knowledge’ and ‘experience,’ on how the narrating I in the travel account describes and communicates that which is experienced to his readership and how similarities and differences interact in the text. The key issues will be the perception and use of space and borders to structure the narrative and to convey knowledge about the places visited to the reader.
