Roman Alexandria is one of the provincial cities of the Augustan period most discussed in our literary sources. By analysing Strabo’s account, and paying particular attention to Strabo’s omissions in his narrative of the city, we can detect the ideological underpinning of his reading. Strabo’s version is compared with what can be reconstructed of other Augustan accounts to show subtly differing readings of Alexandria and responses to its history and culture. Such analyses lay bear the imperialist assumptions of the Roman and Greek writers of the period, and how these assumptions underlie the administrative arrangements by which the new province was governed.
