China sends the largest proportion of international students to U.S. higher education institutions, acts as the country which contributes the largest population of international students globally, and is increasingly attracting global students in the 21st century. Accompanied by students’ bi-directional international mobility, Chinese higher education institutions have established a wide ranging global network. Although Chinese student mobility can be traced back to the late Qing dynasty, only after China adopted the reform and opening-up policy in 1978 did the Sino-global partnerships based on student mobility become a nationwide phenomenon in China. In addition to China’s policies related to higher education mobility, massification of the higher education sector in the late 1990s and accession to the WTO in 2001 have dramatically influenced Chinese students’ mobility prospects. In response to these rapid social changes and distinct characteristics, the popularization of studying abroad in Sino-global higher education partnerships was shaped. This chapter will present a student mobility scenario for Chinese students from historical, economic, political and educational perspectives in Chinese higher education institutions.
