Abstract

In this study, we present the theme of the transition from myth to history, according to Virgil’s poetic and theological perspective; we call this transition “humanism,” insofar as it implies, on the one hand, an overall view of human action, and, on the other, a transition from myth to logos, which does not separate, but integrates the elements of the two notions. This integration has a religious aspect, in which Virgil links, following a tradition that we can trace back to Pindar, but which is obviously much older, popular religiosity about the afterlife and Orphic intuitions about immortality and the destiny of the soul, and a historical one, which places Rome as the Urbs, whose task is, in terms of Augustus’ policy, regere imperio. We call “humanism” to this new consideration of Latin culture, which emerges as an alliance between Apollo and men, in which the beginning of a new ordering of nature appears both in a cosmic and human sense. Therefore, the Virgilian model is religio, in the strict sense of linking the numinous design and the human order.
