An analysis of distractors in measuring achievement provides information about students’ understanding of the variable being measured in the classroom environment. To be able to provide information, a distractor should contain some aspect of the correct answer. Also, the proficiency required to choose the distractor with information should be less than the proficiency required to get a correct answer but greater than the proficiency required to choose an incorrect answer. An item which works in three categories can provide greater potential diagnostic information for teaching and learning than an item in which alternatives are all simply incorrect. An analysis of distractors is especially important for teaching and learning because it can provide information about misunderstandings and misconceptions, especially for lower proficiency groups. It has been noted that constructing multiple choice items with the intention to better capture students’ understanding would be beneficial. The many advantages of multiple choice items, which already include ease of scoring, reliability and applicability to large scale assessment, will be extended. By applying a distractor analysis, the performance of students in different ranges of proficiency on various distractors can be shown.

Rasch analysis provides a method to detect whether distractors have information, especially if there is some ordering implied. In inferring whether distractors have information, distractors should meet content and statistical criteria, that is, a distractor should contain some aspect of the correct answer and scoring polytomously should yield a better fit, including thresholds that are ordered.
