Abstract
This article aims to shed some light on the functioning of the quadrangle, a combinatorial mnemonic mechanism devised by Iacobus Publicius and of great tradition in the artes memorativae. The absence of an explanation of how it works in Publicius’ text has meant that many scholars have not approached this quadrangle. We believe that such an explanation can now be provided by an early 16th century treatise writer, Iohannes Romberch, who not only included this mental instrument in his Congestorium, but also tried to explain it and make it functional. This same author also proposed a second mechanism, very similar to the previous one, to give form to a specific type of images, the inscriptiones.
