In this paper it is suggested that therapeutic endeavours designed to aid clients who are struggling with protracted grief and mourning over the loss of a loved one might be enhanced by the incorporation of specific strategies based on the saying hallo metaphor. This metaphor is proposed as a reversal of a currently prominent narrative on death, which suggests a need to say goodbye to the deceased. Following this, alternative practices, informed by the saying hallo metaphor, such as the use of letter writing, the imagination, remembering, rituals, and dreams are explored.
