Abstract

The years from the assassination of Severus Alexander to Diocletianâs rise to power (235â284) continue to be of interest to modern scholars. This periodâcommonly known as the âThird Century Crisisââexerted a considerable influence on the political, economic, and socioreligious developments of late antiquity. This Third Century âCrisisâ saw not only the Empireâs borders attacked by both Germans and Persians but also the acceleration of changes caused by these attacks. Through a survey of ancient literary sources and the work of modern scholars, this volume provides an overview of critical issues faced by the Empire during that period, such as border wars, the role of the emperor, the Senate, and the equestrian order, as well as questions of finance and currency. Moreover, specific attention will be given to Gaul, Palmyra, and Egypt regions.
