Abstract

Chapter 5, ‘Somaesthetics of Misfit Discomfort,’ also begins with three experiential narratives concerning discomfort and alienation. Whereas the fourth chapter is devoted to hegemonic discomfort, this chapter is devoted to misfit discomfort. This chapter examines how discomfort from being alienated may serve as a somaesthetic affordance for disidentification and affective solidarity. The initial narratives presented are from James Baldwin, Lou Sullivan, and the two poets, Mary McCully Brown and Susannah Nevison. From these narratives, the chapter provides an overview of Garland-Thomson’s co-related concepts of normate and misfit identities. Misfitting connects to somatic discomfort and alienation. Returning to Ordinary People as an object of analysis, the character of Conrad is examined as a discomforted and alienated misfit who begins to engage in somaesthetics as he moves toward disidentification with hegemony and normative strictures. Following the analysis of the film as representative of misfit discomfort, James Baldwin’s narratives concerning the failure of hegemony—especially the hegemony of whiteness—and the importance of discomfort as an affordance for recognizing the precarity of existence are considered. This includes Baldwin’s suggestions regarding connections between narratives concerning pain and the possibility of community. The chapter also examines Lou Sullivan’s writing as it pertains to developing somaesthetics for disidentification and affective solidarity. How his work constitutes the creation of an archive that works against the hegemonic erasure of non-normate genders, sexualities, and their histories is considered. Expanding upon somaesthetics of discomfort for addressing alienation, the chapter considers the work of Molly McCully Brown and Susannah Nevison, who together develop what is taken to be somaesthetic poetics that breaks with hegemonic interpellations of illness and disability. Through their collaborative and individual work, Brown and Nevison decenter ableist narratives and facilitate community formation. Continuing with themes of disability, affective solidarity, and community, the work of Robert F. Murphy and Peter Dunlap-Shohl are considered as contributing to the development of somaesthetics of discomfort, especially regarding somatic transformation and functional change. Finally, the chapter closes by presenting Catherine Frazee’s ideas of excavation, weaving, and coming to pride in Disability Art and imagining them as applying more broadly to facilitate community empowerment and affective solidarity through somaesthetics of discomfort.
