Abstract

An Ottoman document announced and depicted in one of Sothebyâs 1985 auction catalogues of Fine Oriental Manuscripts and Miniatures is centred around the renewal of the Grand Vizier Sokollu Mehmed Pashaâs right to take a certain amount of water daily from the KÄ±rk ÃeÅme water supply system and to use it for his palace in Istanbul. Besides the Istanbul water distribution system, the question of the exact location of Mehmed Sokolluâs palace is being discussed on the background of contemporary Ottoman and European sources. Eventually, this firman is a beautiful example of Ottoman inÅÃ¢ prose or dÃ®vÃ¢n nesri, which typically makes use of rhymed prose segments the constituent elements of which tend to be chosen from among the vocabulary matching the main idea of the text. Here, therefore, the imagery is adapted to the concept of water.
