Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has imposed tremendous challenges in educating students who need to adapt themselves to the complexity and uncertainty of the 21st century. The advocate of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) literacy in mathematics classrooms serves as an educative effort to enrich the learning of mathematics itself through the inclusion of hands-on and minds-on tasks. Such an effort would enhance learners of all kinds, including gifted, talented, creative and dissimilar learners, by equipping them with the skills and abilities through the development of not just analytical but creative and critical minds. Promoting a sense of agency for students of all kinds is critically important for the development of such kind of literacy in response to the ever-challenging adversity of learning environment as the world is being plagued by the pandemic. I would distinguish two types of agencies – agency for learning mathematics and agency of learning mathematics. The former is referring to capability of constructing meaning through the learning of mathematics; whereas the latter is the ability to identify goals and outcomes in the learning of mathematics. The purpose of this chapter is to explore the way of how learner agency (as constituted in the distinction of the two kinds of agencies) can be promoted for developing STEM literacy in mathematics classrooms through the adoption of action research project for supporting teachers’ professional growth. The empirical material is drawn from the case stories of three primary teachers and the methodological orientation for conceptualising learner agency grounded on the principles of action research will be elaborated through the theorising of SIM (STEM-In-Mathematics) project. The findings of the study unfolded the art of promoting learner agency in practicing teaching of mathematics for developing the STEM literacy through the design of mathematical tasks.
