In this text I discuss some aspects of the debate which Richard Rorty and Hilary Putnam engaged in for several years on the notion of rationality. My interest in this debate is that each of their proposals is an example of what I propose to call “soft rationality”. I point out certain shortcomings in their approach and offer another version of soft rationality understood as plural rationality, but limited by a series of common traits which I do not conceive of as a priori, nor as entirely sociocultural, but instead from a viewpoint of social naturalism inspired by Wittgenstein. Here I present my alternative through a reflection on conflict situations which require a partial but profound change in the systems of rationality involved. I maintain that these common traits are peculiar, empirically undetermined beliefs and emotions, which provide a reticulated link between different human systems of rationality.
