Abstract

The introduction discusses Aleš Erjavec’s evolution as a philosopher and critical commentator on the changing character of art under late- and postsocialism, postmodernism, and subsequent global contemporary art. His experience of the Slovenian dissident and alternative art scene of the 1980s and 90s lent him a unique perspective both on the avantgarde art and aesthetics of the past, as well as on the contemporary art that appeared in East-Central Europe, China, and other distinctive sites of artistic production in the 1990s and after the turn of the millennium. It surveys his activity in philosophical aesthetics and art theory, as a scholar, convener, and participant in important debates in contemporary global art and aesthetics.
