Abstract

This article focuses on the patron-author relationship between the Mughal ruler Emperor Akbar (r. 1556â1605) and his vizier Abuâl Fazl ibn Mubarak (1551â1602) and on its visual manifestation in the opening illustration to the Iyar-i Danish, Abuâl Fazlâs version of the Kalila and Dimna stories. The opening illustration depicts a reception at the court of the Sassanian king Khusrau AnÅ«shirvÄn (r. 531â79) upon the return of BurzÅ«ya the physician from India, where he secretly procured the book of Kalila and Dimna. Although related to an episode from the Iyar-i Danish, Akbarâs artists set the scene at the Mughal court, layering the painting with references to Akbar as Khusrau AnÅ«shirvÄn and Abuâl Fazl as BurzÅ«ya. The painting reveals their awareness of the long tradition of the Kalila and Dimna stories in the Muslim world, the processes of translation, assimilation, and the Mughal formation of self-identity in a multi-faceted society.

Abstract

Cet article examine la relation de patron Ã auteur entre lâempereur moghol Akbar (r. 1556-1605) et son vizir Abuâl Fazl ibn Mubarak (1551-1602) et sa manifestation visuelle Ã travers lâillustration qui ouvre lâIyar-i Danish, qui est une version des contes de KalÄ«la wa-Dimna rÃ©digÃ©e par Abuâl Fazl. Lâillustration initiale montre une rÃ©ception Ã la cour du roi sassanide Khusrau AnÅ«shirvÄn (r. 531-79) au moment oÃ¹ le mÃ©decin BurzÅ«ya rentre de son voyage en Inde, oÃ¹ il sâest procurÃ© en secret le livre de KalÄ«la wa-Dimna. Cette scÃ¨ne est en rÃ©alitÃ© liÃ©e Ã un Ã©pisode tirÃ© du Iyar-i Danish, mais les artistes dâAkbar la dÃ©placent Ã la cour moghole, et font rÃ©fÃ©rence Ã Akbar dans le rÃ´le de Khusrau AnÅ«shirvÄn et Ã Abuâl Fazl dans celui BurzÅ«ya.
