Tomoko Fukamachi

(born in 1969) is Professor of public international law at Fukuoka Women’s University. She obtained her m.l. from Kyushu University in 1994. Her recent publications are as follows: “Ryōiki ni kansuru Genshi Kengen: Ryōiki Kengen Ron wa nani o dokomade atsukaunoka [Original Title to Territory: To What and To What Extent Is the Legal Framework of Title to Territory Applied],” Hōgaku Seminā 765 (2018) (in Japanese), which is translated into English and published in Japan Review 6 (1) (2023).

Atsuko Kanehara

a graduate from the University of Tokyo, is Research Director for the Canon Institute for Global Studies, and Senior Fellow for the Sasakawa Peace Foundation. She is an expert on public international law. Her main publications are as follows: “Reassessment of the Acts of the State in the Law of State Responsibility: A Proposal of an Integrative Theoretical Framework of the Law of State Responsibility to Effectively Cope with the Internationally Harmful Acts of Non-state Actors,” Recueil des cours 399 (2019); “Refining Japan’s Integrative Position on the Territorial Sovereignty of the Senkaku Islands,” International Law Studies 97 (2021).

Tomofumi Kitamura

(born in 1979) is Associate Professor of public international law at the University of Tokyo. He obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Tokyo. His main publications are as follows: “Kokusaihō ni okeru Jijō Henkō Gensoku no Hōteki Konkyo [Legal Basis of the rebus sic stantibus Principle in International Law],” Kokusai Kankeiron Kenkyū 27 (2008) (in Japanese); “Kokusaihō jō no Kinkyūhinan ni kansuru Ichi Kōsatsu [A Study of Necessity in International Law],” Hōgakkai Zasshi 55 (2)–56 (2) (2015–2016) (in Japanese).

Tadashi Mori

(born in 1970) is Professor of public international law at the University of Tokyo. He obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Tokyo in 2008. His main publications are as follows: Origins of the Right of Self-Defence in International Law: From the Caroline Incident to the United Nations Charter (Brill, 2018); “Collective Self-Defence in International Law and in the New Japanese Legislation for Peace and Security (2015),” Japanese Yearbook of International Law 60 (2018); “Decisions in Japan to Use Military Force or to Participate in Multinational Peacekeeping Operations,” in Curtis A. Bradley (ed.), Oxford Handbook of Comparative Foreign Relations Law (Oxford University Press, 2019).

Hironobu Sakai

(born in 1963) is Professor of international economic law at Waseda University and Emeritus Professor at Kyoto University. He obtained his m.l. from Kyoto University. His main publications are as follows: “La bonne administration de la justice in the Incidental Proceedings of the International Court of Justice,” Japanese Yearbook of International Law 55 (2012); “The Quest for a Win-Win Solution in the Delimitation of Continental Shelf in the East China Sea: An Irreconcilable Conflict between China and Japan?” in James Kraska, Ronan Long, and Myron H. Nordquist (eds.), Peaceful Maritime Engagement in East Asia and the Pacific Region (Brill, 2022).

Yuichi Sasaki

(born in 1987) is Associate Professor of Japanese political and diplomatic history at Meiji Gakuin University. He obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Tokyo in 2016. His main publications are as follows: Teikoku Nihon no Gaikō, 1894–1922: Naze Hanto wa Kakudai shitanoka [Japanese Diplomacy and the Dynamics of Imperial Expansion, 1894–1922] (University of Tokyo Press, 2017) (in Japanese); Kindai Nihon Gaikō-shi [Japanese Diplomatic History, 1853–1945] (Chūō Kōron Shinsha, 2022) (in Japanese); “Reception and Practice of Diplomacy in Modern Japan: Power, Interests, and Norms,” International Relations of the Asia-Pacific 22 (2) (2022).

Dai Tamada

(born in 1974) is Professor of public international law at Kyoto University. He obtained his Ph.D. from Kyoto University in 2014. His main publications are as follows: Kokusai Saiban no Hanketsukō Ron [Legal Effects of Judgments of International Courts and Tribunals] (Yūhikaku, 2012) (in Japanese); Whaling in the Antarctic: Significance and Implications of the icj Judgment (co-edited, Brill/Nijhoff, 2016); Theory and Practice of Export Control: Balancing International Security and International Economic Relations (co-edited, Springer, 2017); Implementation of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea: State Practice of China and Japan (co-edited, Springer, 2021).

Tetsuya Yamada

(born in 1965) is Professor of public international law at Nanzan University. He obtained his Ph.D. from Kyushu University. His main publications are as follows: Kokuren ga Tsukuru Chitsujo: Ryōiki Kanri to Kokusai Soshikihō [Does the UN Create Order?: International Territorial Administration and the Law of International Organizations] (University of Tokyo Press, 2010) (in Japanese); Kokusai Kikō Nyūmon Dainihan [Introduction to International Organizations 2nd ed.] (University of Tokyo Press, 2023) (in Japanese).

Masaharu Yanagihara

(born in 1952) is Professor of public international law at the Open University of Japan and Emeritus Professor at Kyushu University. He obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Tokyo in 1981. His main publications are as follows: Vorufu no Kokusaihō Riron [The Theory of Christian Wolff] (Yūhikaku, 1998) (in Japanese); “Significance of the History of the Law of Nations in Europe and East Asia,” Recueil des cours 371 (2015); Teikoku Nihon to Fusenjōyaku: Gaikōkan ga mita Kokusaihō no Genkai to Kibō (Japan’s Engagement with Briand-Kellogg Pact) (nhk Publishing, 2022) (in Japanese).
