Abstract

In this chapter, Dip Kapoor draws from anticolonial perspectives from the neo/colonized regions of Africa, Asia and the Americas to explore potential contours of critical adult education for popular educators and social action in Indigenous and small peasant contexts of racial capitalist dispossession, pauperization and exploitation. As he notes, critical adult education is to be understood as emergent from a politics of land and place and a nascent subordinate class politics specific to these spaces of contestation counter-colonial capital in the so-called global postcolonial situations. In these contexts, he adds, small peasants, indigenous peoples and marginal rural dwellers continue to be forcibly evicted and dispossessed in the name of inter/national development and progress, and via the state-capitalist modernization imperatives of establishing capitalist social relations of production and meaning-making. It is with the problematic of these poor, rural actors that are construed as being in the way of development that Kapoor intends to bring into the critical an anti-colonial/colonial land-based dialectic to possibly organize via liberating adult education and attendant social action.
