Abstract

In this paper, we discuss subjective well-being of college students in a mid-size public comprehensive university in California. We discuss two measures of well-being: overall life satisfaction and the U-index calculated using the Day Reconstruction Method. Although overall life satisfaction and the U-index tend to be fairly correlated they do capture different aspects of subjective well-being. According to Kahneman and Krueger, factors like ethnicity, income, and education are more closely related to overall life satisfaction than to the U-index. In addition, they suggest that adaptation to changes in our life circumstances as measured by overall life satisfaction may be different from the U-index. We examine the relationships between these variables in the case of college students. Gender, income and hours of sleep are the most significant factors that related to the U-index. On the other hand, life satisfaction is significantly related to gpa, household income, race/ethnicity, percentage of college costs paid by family and hours of sleep. We explore differences in how students choose to spend their time and the U-index associated with different activities to explain our findings. These findings can have important implications for how we attend to the needs of different sections of the student population to help them succeed.
