Acknowledgments

Gender and the law of the sea was first discussed in the conference “Exploring the human element of the oceans: the gender implications of the law of the sea”, which took place at the School of Law, University of Milano-Bicocca on 25–26 May 2017. I am grateful to all the participants to the conference for supporting this project and for their excellent presentations and lively interventions. The conference was made possible through the generous funding of the School of Law, University of Milano-Bicocca, and I am grateful to its Director, Loredana Garlati, and all my colleagues for their support.

This book includes a selection of the papers presented at the conference, which have been further elaborated on the basis of the discussion during the event, as well as two new papers on topics related to the general theme of the conference. I am particularly grateful to all authors for generously sharing their diverse outlooks on the topic. A great thank you to the group of young international law scholars at the School of Law, who have very kindly and good-humouredly helped with organising the conference and preparing the text of this book for publication: Alice Ollino (who first triggered my interest in this field), Francesca Mussi, Martina Gualtieri, Mariana Clara De Andrade and Gabriela Dutra, as well as to Jake Leslie Thurston for the linguistic revision. Finally, I am greatly indebted to Marie Sheldon, Johanna Lee and their colleagues in the editorial and production departments of Brill.
