Abstract

Within the context of Muslim veiling, the politics of positioning plays a crucial role in the escalating tension between the public misrecognition as seen in todayâs digital media and the personal/private demand by the hijabi for greater acceptance and recognition of her rights to dress accordingly. Through a study of first-person brief âtestimoniesâ submitted by participants of the World Hijab Day Facebook page, this chapter investigates the positioning of veiling as a âmicro-narrativeâ within the current macro-narrative of the Islamophobic world. In the explication of the testimonies and selfies on WHD, we are given a first-hand account into how hijabis choose to describe and position themselves, both as individuals with a distinct personality and fashion sense, and as a member of the Muslim collective. The implication of this study is that despite the grave misrepresentation regarding hijab and its purpose, the hijabis themselves are endowed with clarity of voice and online presence to exercise their sense of self-agency in the act of veiling as seen from their testimonies and selfies.
