Abstract

The paper uses the local-cosmopolitan dimension as analysed in Wade Clark Roof’s seminal publications from 1976 and 1978 to examine non-global attitudes. The intention is to suggest an alternative to the dimension that addresses some of its weaknesses. Based on the 2017 European Values Study (EVS), several countries are included in the analysis. Furthermore, the local-cosmopolitan dimension is deconstructed into a local–non-local and a cosmopolitan–non-cosmopolitan dimension. To these two dimensions is added a national–non-national closeness dimension. The analysis shows that neither the low-high degree of cosmopolitan belonging nor the low-high degree of nationalism intervenes in the relationship between urbanisation and religion. The general picture is that people who live in small communities and feel very close to the community have the most traditional religiosity, and only the low-high degree of local belonging is decisive for specifying the relationship between urbanisation and religiosity.

It is concluded that a scale on globalisation attitudes would probably stretch from global to non-global (and not anti-global) attitudes and that such attitudes do not impact religiosity.
