Abstract

Over the past decade, as digitization of text collections has become essential to preservation and access, there has been immense interest in finding ways to involve the larger community in activities which have traditionally been restricted to the domain of scholarship. This discussion examines the need for digital editing methods which advance participatory models beyond transcription, and it explores how and why new approaches can facilitate the creation of metadatarich digital text collections which can enhance pedagogy and support archival development. Detailed in particular are innovations being implemented and tested within the Martha Berry Digital Archive project, which has developed an Omeka plugin to enable participatory Dublin Core metadata editing and to respond to the unique challenges of accuracy and continuity created by crowdsourcing.
