Abstract

This chapter explores the legal foundation and functioning of the United Nations, focusing on how it shapes and enforces international law to promote peace, security, and cooperation among States. It examines the UN Charter as the core legal instrument that defines the rights and obligations of Member States, the powers of the main UN organs, and the principles guiding international relations. The chapter also details how the UN operates through its key bodies, including the Security Council, General Assembly, and International Court of Justice, to issue binding decisions, resolve disputes, impose sanctions, and oversee peacekeeping operations. It highlights the role of subsidiary organs, specialised agencies, and related organisations in supporting the UN’s global mission. Despite limitations and political divisions, the legal framework of the UN remains a cornerstone of the modern international order.
