Abstract

By using a “backward” chronological approach, this essay examines Irenaeus, Justin Martyr, Polycarp, Ignatius, and 1 Clement as early Christian sources reflecting nascent impulses that influenced the development of the formation of the canon. Such influential precursors included the treatment of works now in the New Testament as recognized and functional authorities and the germinal coalescing of some such writings. The early assembling of works signaled a textual focus, while the recognition of authority could often manifest a more “personalist” (or person-focused) approach. Moreover, the core acceptance of Jesus Christ as the authoritative Lord was depicted within a redemptive framework that included anticipation by prophets and representation by apostles. Finally, the deeply rooted impulse embodied in this redemptive framework preceded Marcion and reflected conceptual precedents as found in earlier texts such as Hebrews and Romans.
