Abstract

Fairy tales and myth have featured in Kerstin Henselâs work since the 1980s, and are particularly prominent in the 2021 poetry collection Cinderella rÃ¤umt auf. This chapter examines some of Henselâs short prose and poetry in order to trace the development of fairy tale motifs across time, with particular focus on the Cinderella motif. Henselâs fairy tale versions can be divided by form and by voice, and either reference the genre as a whole or specific intertexts. Over the course of her oeuvre, Henselâs short prose texts tend towards much looser forms of engagement with fairy tale narratives, images and language, destabilising the form through exaggeration. The recurring references to Cinderella in poetry meanwhile show the persistence of isolated motifs which are recombined in more affectful forms (focusing on eyes being pecked out, escape and flight) at the same time as the global circulation and resonance of the tale comes to the fore.
