Overview

As teachers, we have a responsibility to guide students to become college and career ready. This inherently means that the empowerment of students is essential to their success, requiring agency and autonomy to be practiced in a safe learning environment in a classroom setting. Empowerment cultivates curiosity and properly prepares learners to become full-fledged members of society. But what happens when that safety is jeopardized by a global pandemic? How can teachers still empower their students during such unprecedented uncertainty?

Meaningfulness, authentic writing experiences, and choice all play integral roles in empowering students. In this chapter, I contend that hope is a major component of the equation as well. It is hope that gives us purpose, gives us meaning and motivation to push forward despite even the most arduous circumstances. Hope is a conscious decision that can become a mindset, be shared, and spark change. We must empower our students through hope even when faced with unparalleled fear and unpredictability, though it is admittedly harder to do so.

By gamifying elements of the writing process, students’ pathways to hope and success become attainable and sustainable. I strive to continue exploring new ways to empower students though inquiry-based learning and gamifying assessments whenever possible. I also make it a point to share my hope with students—to show them that learning is a journey and that mistakes are part of the process. It is this hope that has created a unique dynamic between my students and me during the pandemic years.
