Abstract

Parental involvement in child education via collaboration with teachers and assisting their children at school can positively affect these children’s learning outcomes, academic success and social, emotional and psychological development. This study explored the perceptions of 40 Russian immigrant parents residing in Cyprus in rural areas regarding their choice of English language education in rural contexts and involvement in their children’s learning English as a second or foreign language. Both questionnaires and oral interviews were used for data collection. The focus was on the reasons why immigrant families choose rural communities, on the parental involvement in their children’s English language education, their relationship and collaboration with teachers and schools as well as other parents from the Russian community in Cyprus, home literacy environment and the help and support that the parents provide their children with at home. The study’s findings suggest that the main reasons for the parents’ choice and predictors of the parental involvement are gender, family structure, L1 language and culture, socio economic status, educational background and home literacy environment as well as intercultural communication and attitudes of parents and teachers towards multilingualism, integration and collaboration, all of which provide some evidence in support of the previous research.
