Abstract

âBonae litterae as an Affective Appreciation of Knowledge: âSpeech as an Image of the Human Spiritâ, aims at the realization of the formation of a way of life supported by good models of deeds, behaviors, attitudes, and utterances, as the ethics of philosophy universalis. This chapter views practicism and literature that help outline historical figures, yet without succumbing to biography, thus retaining the âlasting typus and exampleâ in which each individual works out, in consensus, a glimmer of their own ineffable individuality, and thus, in the words of the well referenced author, Bietenholz, their âuniversal humanityâ. It is through language, where late in his life, Erasmus turned, with his 1525, Lingua, that the human spirit or ineffable image of the ethical person becomes possible to imitate through a style. This richly layered chapter covers the ways in which one may avoid scholastic delicacies, for a more practisist view of living, non-fictional characters where word and deed coincide in how âThe mind shines through the speechâ (Animus in oratione relucet).
