Abstract

The right to work is recognized by international law as a fundamental human right and an important way to empower women. Nevertheless, from a feminist perspective, the mainstream right to work jurisprudence has some key blind spots. It overlooks issues of unpaid domestic care work mainly undertaken by women, the undervalued care work at the labor market, the unequal resources women have at the workplace, and the dynamic relations between the law, gender and space at the workplace. The article argues that the international legal standards of the right to work must address these blind spots so that it can contribute to fully realizing the principle of gender equality.
