Abstract

Daily competencies and strategies used to govern uncertainty, to face trade-offs and unexpected events, are no longer suited to the actual organization of social reality. In fact, any variable, action or dynamic is related and interwoven with others and their effects are perceived locally and globally. Complexity theory provides an understanding of how systems – national economies, global corporations or government organisations, for example – grow, adapt and evolve. All around the world we witness leaders, in various fields, adopting simplified, inadequate answers when attempting to solve managerial issues in complex situations. An interdisciplinary approach is needed in education and elsewhere, because philosophical, psychological and social factors come into play. Rather than applying the classic remedy of best practice, we need to possess the capacity to interpret the evolution of the context in which events take place, unfold and grow. Organisations move from a complicated mode of handling day-to-day matters to a more complex mode of operation that evolves and adapts according to their internal characteristics and environment. To face future challenges, people must be trained to handle complexity, employing the tools needed to foresee the effects of their actions in order to evaluate the risks and opportunities that are involved in taking decisions as events unfold. As educators, our task is to teach new generations the skills they will need to help them live in this more complex environment. In 2016, the World Economic Forum (2016) published an interesting report, The Future of Jobs, where it foresaw that in 2020 more than a third of jobs in all sectors would require creative expertise in solving complex problems. Inadequate, obsolete abilities must be replaced by creative and critical thinking, to evaluate how processes develop with responsible decision-making. Data science and cultural competence are also added as tied to sustainability and ethics, necessary for any kind of job. Cognitive flexibility is the key to the whole process.
