Abstract

During the early Middle Ages both laypeople and clerics used documents in their business affairs. But lay archives have not survived. In fact, almost all early medieval written lay sources have been preserved in ecclesiastical archives, both in cartulary copies and single-sheet parchments. In this essay I examine records of judicial proceedings with references to lay deperdita (i.e., lost charters cited in preserved documents) in order to understand the role of the written word within rural societies of two areas in Western Europe: northern Spain and central Italy.
