Abstract

Activist efforts to preserve and publicly memorialise nineteenth century patient built boundary walls at the former Toronto Asylum for the Insane will be analysed in the context of critically re-interpreting an asylumâs past while working with psychiatric facility administrators to ensure this material history is not destroyed and patientsâ labour history is properly acknowledged. Issues around co-option of this history by psychiatrists as well as some historiansâ reaction against activist efforts will be critiqued by discussing the politics of memorialising marginalized groups in history and how these efforts challenge traditional interpretations, in this case, mad peoplesâ unpaid work as exploitation rather than therapy.
