Abstract

In this chapter, we explore the use of poetic re-presentation to contemplate the role trust plays in fostering a positive learning environment within higher education. To introduce this chapter, we go backward before going forward. We begin with a brief story of why we chose to explore the topic of trust in higher education using the alternative qualitative method of poetic re-presentation. We demonstrate how poetic re-presentation has helped us frame our role more explicitly as researchers and has helped us more deeply listen to our participants’ words and ideas. We tell the story of how poetry and poetic representation has shaped our study of trust within higher education. We then share a selection of poems with the reader that encapsulate fundamental concepts of trust gleaned from our use of poetic re-presentation. The chapter includes an analysis of poetic re-presentation as a method of inquiry for research in higher education. Finally, we conclude the chapter with a call to action for readers to critically reflect on the vital role trust plays in higher education and consider how poetic re-presentation can be used in their Scholarship of Teaching and Learning in higher education research.
