Abstract

This chapter reviews Robert Personsâs active oversight of printing operations during and immediately after the Jesuit English mission to England in 1580/1581, drawing attention to the value of his correspondence for understanding the contexts. It examines the relationship between polemic and controversy, stresses the importance of immediate response to Protestant publications, and focuses on the revision and reprinting of De persecutione Anglicana (1581/1582) and The First booke of the Christian exercise (1582) as A Christian directorie (1585).
