Developing independent reading skills for African children: will strategies familiar to Western educators be appropriate in multilingual African contexts? The purpose of this chapter is to identify effective pedagogical strategies for African readers. The chapter re-examines certain reading theories and resulting instructional practices – all products of research on monolingual English language speakers – with African linguistic and orthographic characteristics in mind. Specifically, I challenge the applicability of Dual-Route theories (Coltheart & Baron, 1978, 2005) to reading pedagogy in most African writing systems. Lexical route strategies are often used in Africa, almost to the exclusion of phonological route strategies. With limited resources and low levels of functional literacy across the continent, any mismatch of methodologies should raise concern for literacy and development professionals.
